I’m scrambling through my chaotic handbag hoping to find a magical antihistamine tablet, which can only mean one thing… summer is coming. Yes, it’s time to dig out your oversized shades and don your old pair of shorts for this seasons search of wardrobe essentials.
I have always been a fan of bright colours and unique prints, so it is no surprise that the trend catching my eye this season is all about the tropics. Think anything ranging from flamingo prints, to classic floral brights and cute little gold pineapple necklaces.
This season’s catwalks showed us Brazillian goddesses by Nicole Miller, teaming busy bright prints with stripes and eclectic fabrics. Print design king Matthew Williamson took a softer approach using abstract tropical prints on soft fabrics to create an ethereal aesthetic to his SS15 collection. Micheal Kors and Alexander Mcqueen played on embellishments and focused on creating tactile collections, most notably the skirts in Michael Kors’ runway, offering dainty handmade flowers scattered across delicate fabrications.
But if you don’t quite fancy showing off your feathers in a bold print, why not opt for a dye-it-yourself project involving tie-dye? There are many affects created with tie-dye and you can go for a fresh summer colour or a muted palette instead. Dylon have a beautiful range of colours, and after using them for years in my own projects I can recommend the quality – see William Gee’s Dylon range here. Plus you can dye-it-yourself out in the summer garden and get some sun at the same time, what’s not to like, sun and a custom wardrobe!
Perhaps with the Chelsea flower show looming on the horizon, we might see a sudden bloom in floral prints, so be sure to pick your own!
Happy summer everyone!
