Madonna posing for racy photos is nothing new, but she’s not doing it to be lewd, she’s using her body to tell a story. And it’s one that encourages female sexuality and paints a vivid picture of the sexism that still exists in modern society. This is perhaps the main reason she is the perfect cover girl for Cosmopolitan magazine’s 50th anniversary – as the magazine itself encourages women to know who they are and celebrate it.
In fact, Cosmopolitan and Madonna have come full circle, because she was also the magazine’s 25th anniversary cover girl in 1990, and both have enjoyed considerable popularity and longevity.
The “Like A Virgin” hit maker — who on one of the covers wears a sultry black mask, a lace glove and red lipstick, while playfully biting down on an oversized pearl necklace — says that “Popularity comes and goes.” What’s really important then is that “You need to know who you are, what you stand for, and why you’re here.”
Speaking of sexuality, Madonna told the magazine, “Don’t be fooled, not much has changed — certainly not for women. We still live in a very sexist society that wants to limit people. Since I started, I’ve had people giving me a hard time because they didn’t think you could be sexual or have sexuality or sensuality in your work and be intelligent at the same time. For me, the fight has never ended.”
The magazine features not one, but four covers of the Material Girl, and the issues hits newsstands on April 14.
