I love making little bits for my home all year around, but I particularly enjoy homemade festive decorations. I was looking through the lovely velvet ribbons that William Gee stocks, and came up with a few fun ideas for working them into your festive projects.
Velvet is beautiful and luxurious – whether you’re looking to work it into your dressmaking or decorate home projects, velvet goes hand in hand with Christmas.
My favourite festive ideas
There are so many things you can decorate with velvet ribbon, but I’ve put together a little list of my favourite ideas for this year. For my projects I decided on this 9mm rich pinky plum colour (Acajou).
Use them as trim!
I’ve wanted to make some Christmas stockings from fabric scraps for years, and this year finally pieced them together. It only took a couple of hours to make the pair.
I hand stitched the outer stockings to someĀ scraps for a quilted effect, then lined them. To attach the velvet hang I cut a piece of ribbon the length I wanted, then sewed it in between the boot outer and boot lining.
The velvet ribbon looks so lovely as a way to hang them up.
You could also trim the top of the stocking with ribbon, perhaps using a thicker width as a beautifully luxurious top to the boot.
Decorate your festive wreath or table decorations
I love foraging a few bits from my garden to make seasonal wreaths and table decorations. I think the velvet adds a lovely touch. I wound it around the wreath to decorate it, as well as to secure the foliage.
As my ribbon is narrow, I tied a small and delicate bow to finish it off. For a dramatic look you could tie a larger bow using a thicker width of ribbon – perhaps at the bottom of your door wreath, letting the ends hang down long. I think I’ll do this next year!
Wrap your presents with ribbon
I don’t use non-recyclable tape for presents, so collect all the ribbons I can to tie up presents for Christmas. I think they give them the most beautiful finish, and velvet ribbon always feels so special and festive.
Have fun decorating with velvet!
