Stripes have once again returned to the catwalk, and they’re as popular as ever. We have been lusting over designs on the runways of Valentino, Lisa Parry, Lacoste, Tome and Yigal Azrouel, who produced garments that were both fresh and fun.
From horizontal to vertical and even chevron, stripes have been seen in all shapes and forms including loose-fitting dresses and tailored suits. The reason stripes are such a popular choice amongst designers is because they sell, and one of the reasons they sell is because they are flattering and versatile for a variety of different body types – just watch the intensity and direction of the stripes, and make sure to avoid horizontal stripes if you have a fuller figure. The other reason stripes are loved by many is because they are classic and timeless (clearly evident by their longevity in the fashion world).
Here are a few simple tips to remember when wearing stripes:
1. There are of course a wide range of different coloured stripes available, but if you are just starting to embrace this trend we recommend starting off with the classic navy and white stripes. This is far less daunting and much easier to style.
2. Stripes benefit from the addition of a textured piece, so pair your striped fit-and-flare skirt with a fitted cashmere jumper, or wear a leather jacket over either a vertical striped dress or a pair of striped raffia pants.
3. Remember that stripes lend themselves well to accessories and if you are wearing monochromatic stripes this is the perfect time to add a pop of colour to your look. A a statement necklace or bright coloured bag will work well, and if you are opting for coloured stripes, accessorise them with metallic accessories but remember, this look is always best when you keep the accessories simple and chic.
4. Start small: If the thought of wearing a head-to-toe outfit in bold stripes is too much for you to bear, then slowly introduce this trend into your wardrobe with a striped bag, sunglasses or shoes.
