Alexander McQueen x Damien Hirst

Hello there, nice to meet you!

First I had better begin by introducing myself to you – I am a keen hand-knitter, glitter lover and all round quirky individual who goes by the name of Bryony Elizabeth Selway. As a full time student, studying Fashion at Northumbria, I like to think that I am pretty savvy regarding the world of fashion textiles, and all things sewing! So much so that I also write my own fashion blog (details below) – hence why I am now Williamgee.co.uk’s new blogging aficionado!

I aim to bring to you a roundup of all things fashion and textiles to keep you inspired and knowledgeable. I thought that as well as introducing myself to you, I would share with you some news that got me very excited this week:

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN x DAMIEN HIRST

Need I say more? An almost overwhelming, yet very appropriate collaboration I am sure you will all agree. This incredible collection was released at the end of last week. Phew, the wait is finally over!

In Spring/Summer 2003, McQueen himself introduced, the now iconic, skull-print silk scarf, a piece that most fashionistas dream of owning. Now, 10 years on and after saddening and significant changes to the McQueen label, the skull-print scarf is being given a new lease of life with the help of art genius and lover of all things macabre, Damien Hirst.

The Bristol-born artist, (as a west-country girl this automatically makes me feel as if we are kindred spirits, I know, I’m a fool. But Bristol is cool, okay?) used his Entomology series as inspiration for the highly anticipated collaboration, using insects such as butterflies and spiders to create a wild kaleidoscope effect with the inclusion of the pivotal skull motif.

The scarves went on sale on Friday 15th November on www.alexandermcqueen.com

My favourites from the collection are typically the most expensive, story of my life, eh! I especially adore the fragmented chaotic feel of the prints, yet the soft cashmere and silk gives them a delicacy that is truly beautiful. What I find most intriguing about them is that from a distance they look like an abstract print of exquisite colours, yet on closer inspection you can pick out the insects within the pattern and appreciate how they have been tessellated together.

Christmas present anyone? Anyone? No? Urgh, looks like I’m going to have to start saving…
