So it’s winter. Like really winter. Cold, rain, wind, all that jazz. Chances are your daily uniform consists of jumpers, jumpers and more jumpers. I’m going to go out on a limb and say you are probably getting pretty tired of your current collection of jumpers. But what about that old one buried away that you’ve neglected for years? Dig it up, dust it off and prepare it for a facelift. Here are five ideas on how to give old knitwear new life.
1. Mittens
We’ll start out simple, if you’ve got a jumper that you can’t really do much with don’t give up hope. If it has a nicely ribbed bottom hem you can transform it into a pair of mittens. (The ribbed hem is important as this is what will keep the mittens from constantly slipping off.) This project is shockingly easy and can be done in no time
I think this one is my favorite option of them all– and I don’t even have a baby. A pair of teeny tiny leggings made from a jumper’s arms? Too cute. This tutorial is relatively simple and will keep your little one warm and cozy.
If you’re like me, cutting into something knitted feels a bit like Russian Roulette. Maybe it will be fine or maybe it will all unravel and turn into a giant, tangled mess of yarn before my eyes. However, this is rarely ever actually the case. So be brave, grab those scissors and carefully cut yourself a cardigan. This project can be as intricate or a simple as you choose. I’d recommend adding buttons and a decorative trim for a fully revived jumper.
If your jumper fits just fine but bores you to tears here is an easy idea to make it more interesting: stitch on some pom-poms. If that sounds a little eclectic for you don’t panic– it can be as subtle or vibrant as you choose. Add on tons of bright colors like in this tutorial or if you’re after something more subdued, stick to one color pom-pom that compliments your jumper.
I have a jumper that is big and super soft, but it’s just doesn’t look great on. But you know what it would look great on? My couch. If your jumper is fairly big, simply cut out the body into the pillow size you prefer and sew up the sides.
Hopefully these ideas have you digging through your wardrobe to rescue all those pieces of poor neglected knitwear. If you have any other ideas or have tried any of these, please share!
